Sandhill Cranes and Birds at CRP!
Very exciting day to visit Consumnes River Preserve out in Galt (near Lodi) to see some birds and experience the annual Sandhill Crane migration! We began at CRP and walked some trails where I was able to capture several birds in the water and in the trees. I wish we had more time to explore there, we were only there for about an hour before we headed over to Staten Island Road to see the cranes.
It was fun to see the different geese and ducks and other shorebirds when we got closer to a larger body of water.
This was the first day of using the Nikon P1000, I definitely have to get used to it. The mega zoom was very enticing, and I couldn’t resist, but it comes at a technical price.

We sat along a cornfield and it there were so many cranes peppered around, completely camouflagued, you could hardly see them. Just down the road was a marshier area and we went down there for sunset, where the birds were actually landing on their way in.
Once the sun started setting it went down really fast and before we knew it we were in the dark… the Nikon P1000 does not do well in low-light / dark, I was pushing it pretty hard in manual mode and it was struggling!
Can’t wait to head back up and spend more time in this area, it was amazing!
